Nokia 6790 Mako Hands On!

So check it… We just got our hands on Nokia’s 6790 (codenamed Mako) device — the freaky 3G sliding QWERTY headed for AT&T. There have been no live pictures of this bad boy so we went ahead and took a bunch. The phone itself is drastically different from what we’d expect from Nokia (just based on their design heritage) yet ridiculously lackluster. While most of you (us included) thought this would be a high-end device, our quick perusal dictates otherwise. It feels like it would fit right in with the Samsung Propels, LG Xenons and Pantec Matrixs of the world. That’s not to say this is anything final, the unit we have is obviously not a retail unit nor is the software it’s running finished either, but these are just the first impressions we’re getting.

The screen is pretty low-res and low quality as well. We’re not feeling the keyboard (the fact Nokia still doesn’t move the letter Z one space over is hilarious) and the unit itself screams low-end to be perfectly honest. Kind of a let down. Check out our photos of this mythical beast in our gallery, leave us any questions in the comments, and stay tuned for a review of this unit pretty soon!

Samsung Preston and Star Touch Screens

Samsung decided that two of their latest touchscreen phones, S5600 and S5230, to give them new “trade names”, as Samsung Preston and Star. The Preston and Star, both are almost similar except that the Preston boasts a faster HSDPA connectivity for data. Also, both use Samsung’s TouchWiz GUI: the S5230 has a 3-inch WQVGA display, while the S5600 has a 2.8-inch QVGA panel. They are now available for purchase in Asia, Europe, and some other world markets.

The Samsung S5230 Star is a non-3G cell phone that comes equipped with a 3.0-inch WQVGA touchscreen display and a 3 megapixel camera. It measures only 11.9mm thick and features Samsung’s widget based TouchWiz user interface.

The Samsung Preston (S5600) comes in a slim and compact design, featuring support for full Internet browsing, 7.2Mbps HSDPA connectivity and accelerometer. It also includes a 2.8-inch QVGA full-touch screen and the TouchWiz UI, as well as a 3.2-megapixel camera, music recognition using Shazam’s “Find Music” service and an 80MB internal memory coupled with a microSD memory card slot with support for up to 8GB of additional storage space. Though not released yet. It seems that the Samsung Star has registered great demand already, as more than 2 Million units are reported to have been pre-ordered until now.

3G Video calls on the latest LG watch phone

LG had been showcasing a prototype phone that could be worn on a wrist throughout 2008 and at CES 2009, the Korean giant has officially announced the device. The watch phone comes with a touchscreen, HSDPA connectivity and allows users to make video calls. And the best thing, 'this watch phone will actually be available for purchase,' says the press release!

While we are no fans of watch phones (not yet), the key takeaway from this device will be the miniaturisation of components. The manufacturer has managed to cram the basic voice telephony module but also added HSDPA, a touchscreen, stereo Bluetooth and a built-in speaker. We haven't seen the phone yet, but we hope that it shows time too! Source...

Samsung M8800 Bresson touchscreen phone with 8 megapixel camera

It is rumored that Samsung intends to market mobile phone with another 8-megapixel camera than the INNOV8 Samsung i850, which seems to be called Samsung M8800 Bresson.

The Samsung M8800 Bresson, in addition to the impressive resolution of the camera, which will flash and autofocus, which also seems to come with a 3.2-inch touchscreen, GPS and 3G HSDPA for, in addition to multimedia applications and better integration of Office.

With this mobile betting is Samsung's clear by the high-resolution cameras integrated into mobile phones and the rise of touch screens in the new high-end models.

But the most interesting part of this rumor, and as such, it should be remembered that the characteristics of the model may vary, is that it seems that the official presentation will be the next day on September 25, and although we still do not know what will be its price, we can guess that will be somewhat expensive.

HTC Touch HD - Latest family member of HTC

After yesterday’s somewhat disappointing HTC Opal news it looks like HTC fans can do a complete 180 and get pumped. This thing might look like a BlackBerry Thunder but thanks to TouchFLO 3D we can be pretty sure the Touch HD will offer a much better touch interface. Very little is known about this sexy little devil at this point but here’s what we can tell you:
480 x 800 pixel WVGA touchscreen display (!)
Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional
TouchFLO 3D UI band-aid
3G (you better hit that tri-band radio, HTC!)
Qualcomm 7201A processor @ 528MHz
512MB ROM / 256MB RAM (+32MB on processor)
All that plus a heaping dose of badass has us pretty excited. In fact, we’ve almost completely forgotten about the Opal. Our hope is that someone at HTC wised up, canned the Opal and this is what they coughed up instead. Source...

LG Viewty 8MP phone gets official announcement

LG have announced the new LG-KC910, an update to the successful LG Viewty that features an 8 megapixel camera. It's not the first 8 megapixel camera to be announced, but the new LG comes with some stunning specs that in many ways blows the competition out of the water.
More details of the LG-KC910 after the jump.

LG-KC910 overview
As you can see, the LG-KC910 (or LG Viewty II, as somepeople are calling it) is a touchscreen candybar phone featuring a user interface not dissimilar to that of the latest smartphones. Having a big analogue clock in the middle of a touchscreen seems de rigeur, these days, and the LG-KC910 is no different. Keeping up with the Samsungs, you could say!
More impressive, though, is the list of features. Just check this lot out:
  • 8 megapixel camera with Schneider-Kreuznach certified optics
  • Auto-focus and manual focus
  • Xenon Flash
  • Adjustable ISO sensitivity up to 1600
  • Image Stabilization
  • Face tracking
  • Smile detection
  • Blink detection (yes, seriously!)
  • aGPS
  • Dolby Mobile
  • DivX and Xvid movie playback
  • 3" WQVGA touschcreen
  • Wi-Fi
  • 7.2Mbps HSDPA
  • Video recording up to 120fps for slow-mo playback
Phew! That's one seriously long list of features. In fact, other than the ability to play the trumpet, I don't think there's anything they've actually missed out.
The LG-KC910 is, quite clearly, LG's new flagship handset, and looks set to take on the Samsung Omnia and Nokia N96 head to head. Whether it'll succeed or not will be dependent largely on how well these features are implemented, as LG are renowned for making phones with a superb feature-set, but with a poor user interface, making the features almost impossible to use.
We'll only know once we get our grubby hands on one, but fortunately we won't have to wait too long - the LG-KC910 Viewty II release date is set for October 2008, so just over a month until we find out. Source...

Sony Ericsson officially unveiled G705

Sony Ericsson fans have reason to rejoice this morning as the handset manufacturer has finally made its anticipated G705 official. Sure, we’ve seen and read plenty already but now we’ve got the official specs and equally as important, a time line. Here’s where it gets a little tricky; those of you who have been waiting for this sexy little slider are going to have to keep waiting. It looks like the G705 isn’t scheduled to become available here in the US until sometime in Q1 2009, though it will be released in Q4 2008 elsewhere. Some more bad news for US SE fans is that while Sony Ericsson has announced that it will issue a UMA-enabled G705u version of this handset (SE’s first UMA phone), it will be an Orange exclusive. Ok, ok. Enough bad news - now for the good stuff:
  • GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900
  • Tri-band 3G in the US version - UMTS/HSUPA 850/1900/2100
  • 2.4-inch display
  • HTML browser
  • Automatic screen-orientation rotation
  • Inbuilt aGPS combined with Google Maps for Mobile and Wayfinder
  • WiFi and DLNA certified, Bluetooth 2.0 (A2DP)
  • 3.2 megapixel camera with Photo fix and geotagging support
  • YouTube compatible - upload video directly to YouTube

New HTC Opal successor of HTC Touch

It looks like HTC are about to release another Windows Mobile handset, this time a replacement for the Touch. The device is code named the HTC Opal and it sports a very similar form factor to the original Touch. The brief specs are an Omap 200mhz processor, 128 meg Ram and 256 Meg Rom, WiFi b and g and Windows Mobile 6.1. No mention of GPS and definitely no 3G. It is quad band GSM,GPRS and Edge only. It will have the latest TouchFlo 3D software onboard. Looks like a strange device as it is not that different from the original Touch and the specs are definitely not a great leap forward with the 200mhz processor, 2MP fixed focus camera and 320 x 240 QVGA screen. Would have been nice to see a VGA version with a faster processor. Check out smartmobilegadgets for the full specifications. Source...

ASUS released its P552w PDA phone with new "GLIDE" features

ASUS today launched the ASUS P552w PDA phone which features Glide – an innovative touch-responsive user interface that makes navigating and performing tasks on a mobile phone more intuitive and interactive than ever before. Equipped with a 624MHz processor and a host of market-leading features such as 3.5G HSDPA connectivity, GPS and seamless Google integration, the ASUS P552w PDA phone is a perfect fit for the rising tide of young, tech-savvy professionals who appreciate a good-looking mobile companion that packs a wealth of fun features and yet is no slouch when it comes to work.

Glide to a New Mobile Experience
Underpinning the ASUS P552w’s revolutionary touch-responsive user interface is its cutting-edge Gester technology that enables users to perform a variety of navigational actions – such as selecting, zooming, scrolling and flipping – easily through simple flicks of their fingers. Incorporated into Glide are also applications that enable users to access a wide range of functions such as looking up the latest news, checking the weather forecast, viewing photo slideshows and listening to music within a few finger taps. These applications, dubbed Multi-Home, Anytime Launcher, EziPhoto, and EziMusic, give the expression "the world at your fingertips" a whole new meaning.

Unprecedented Processing Power, Speed and Connectivity
The ASUS P552w boasts one of the most powerful CPUs (624MHz) on the market today. Apart from posting exceptional Vsbenchmark scores, the ASUS P552w’s real-world results are equally tangible – applications and games run noticeably faster and video frame rates are markedly smoother. The ASUS P552w also features 3.5G HSDPA (3.6Mbps) connectivity for the fastest Internet browsing, file sharing and TV program-streaming experience possible. Furthermore, it offers Bluetooth, WLAN 802.11b/g, GPS, USB and other connectivity standards to enable easy data transfers to and from other devices.

Deep Google Integration
The ASUS P552w features Google Maps* which not only facilitates navigation, but is capable of furnishing users with information on points of interest. The ASUS P552w’s navigation capabilities are further bolstered by a feature known as ASUS SMS Location Link. With this exclusive feature, users at two different locations can locate each other easily by sending each other SMS messages. Clicking on the URLs which are automatically embedded in the sent messages will link the phones up to Google Maps, which will then provide the users with clear directions on how to get to each other’s positions. The ASUS P552w also features a convenient Google Search Bar on the Today screen that makes it easier to perform online queries.

EziPhoto, EziMusic and Other Applications
The ASUS P552w comes preinstalled with applications that allow users to get an easy handle on entertainment. The most exciting of these are EziPhoto and EziMusic. EziPhoto enables users to flip through their photo collection with their fingertips, akin to how they would with a real album. It also has a Calendar option which organizes and displays the thumbnails of photos users have taken according to the dates in which they were snapped, allowing them to relive those moments in chronological order at a single glance. EziMusic offers an interactive interface – complete with exciting animations – for users to play and manage their music, performing each task with colorful aplomb. The ASUS P552w also houses applications that enable easy access to web content like RSS newsfeeds, YouTube movies and photos on Flickr, ensuring that users have a full complement of entertainment options to choose from while out of the house or office. Nokia released two smart phones, N79 and N85

Nokia announced two new handsets this morning, both revamped replacements of models yore.

First up is the Nokia N79, which will be replacing the N78 that hit the shelves only months ago. You ever meet a pair of twins, but its blatantly apparent which one got the good genes? The N79 got the good genes here. It’s got the 5 megapixel camera (up from 3.2), dual LED flash, 3G, GPS, and microSDHC support. Most importantly, it doesn’t have the N78’s nasty little thumb-ruining number pad.
Also being replaced is the N81, with the launch of the N85. It’s getting the same upgrade to 5 megapixels (up from 2), GPS/Geotagging capabilities, and a shiny new 2.6″ AMOLED screen. Looks like Nokia is indeed making the move to AMOLED, as we mentioned a few weeks ago.

Expect’em in the UK sometime near October, hopefully with an official North American release not too far thereafter. Source...

Samsung SGH-i688 Olympic Phone

In commemoration of the Olympics, Samsung has rolled out the SGH-i688 that is powered by Windows Mobile 6.0 and supports China's domestic 3G standard, TD-SCDMA (time-division synchronous code-division multiple access). What makes this handset so special is the ability to connect to a "Wireless Olympic Works" (WOW) network that boasts real-time schedules, results, weather information, email, and instant messaging to Olympic officials. Hardware specifications are pretty much kept hush-hush, although we do know this comes with a 2.8" touch screen display and a Chinese version of Windows Mobile 6.0 Professional. It features Chinese handwriting recognition and a FM receiver, to boot. No idea on the price though. Source...

AT&T HTC Touch Pro

AT&T isn't offering just one hot touch screen phone, but it has another model up its sleeves - the HTC Touch Pro. I'll be the first to admit that this won't even come near the iPhone (both generations) in terms of sales, but it is an interesting handset to own after all, featuring 3G connectivity over the 850 band, the TouchFlo 3D interface and AT&T branding. You'll miss out on the front facing VGA camera though, so don't throw away that webcam just yet. Source...
