Nokia 5800 Star Trek Edition

Did you think that Nokia’s 5800 deserved to be mentioned in the same breath as other shows, aside from The Dark Knight? Well, Nokia has just revealed that it will be releasing a special Star Trek edition of the device. Even better news is that the device will be available for free on contract with Vodafone, Orange, T-Mobile and O2. The Star Trek version will feature animated screen savers, wallpapers, eight exclusive Star Trek ringtones, and is completed by a phazer application. This Star Trek edition of the Nokia 5800 will certainly be the phone to bring to the next Star Trek convention.

Samsung Omnia i900 - Available NOW exclusive to Orange!

The Samsung Omnia is starting to cause quite a stir across the internet. If the slick promo video on the official website isn't enough to interest you then check the specs. A 5 megapixel camera with auto focus and LED flash - yes, a 5 megapixel shooter. Then you've got the fast HSDPA 7.2Mbps connectivity with WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth 2.0, USB 2.0, FM radio with RDS and a whizzy TouchWiz UI from Samsung.

Oh, and did we not mention the 16Gb storage with microSDHC slot, TV output, geo-tagging, business card recognition and content-sharing with fellow Samsung DNLA kit? Eh ? Eh ? Oh, and there's a juicy 1440mAh battery to give you long usage times too.

So it's all good, but when is it coming to your local stores? Well, we can reveal that the Samsung Omnia i900 will be exclusive to Orange. The 16Gb version should be arriving in stores TODAY - Saturday August 16th. According to our sources you can get it free on the £40 p/m tariff. Sure, Orange have the BlackBerry Bold exclusive too, but the Omnia is the handset we're loving at the minute!

Orange reportedly offering upgrade deals for next iPhone

Multiple readers of French technology site PCInpact are claiming to have been called by Orange regarding an upgrade to the future Apple handset (English translation through Electronista).

The first solution would allegedly entail a direct swap. A trade-in for the current model would reduce the price of a new iPhone to 50 Euros, effectively subsidizing nearly all the cost of the new phone with the old one.

Alternately, subscribers could obtain the next iPhone at what's referred to as a "generous" discount, the website claims, although what this would involve is a mystery.

Orange, for its part, remains silent in regards to the matter and has yet to address PCInpact's claims.

If true, such a gesture by the carrier would represent the first instance of a subsidy connected to the new and likely 3G-capable iPhone -- an offer previously unavailable with any of the iPhone's six countries, which for now offer the handheld at full price and compensate Apple by supplying a portion of its subscription revenues each month.

Other changes from the iPhone's largely fixed prices have revolved around temporary discounts to clear overstock at certain carriers, including a £100 price drop for 8GB iPhones through O2 UK and an ongoing variable-rate discount through T-Mobile's German branch that discounts the iPhone depending on the customer's choice of service plan.

Analysts have suggested that Apple may need to begin subisidies with its next-generation iPhone to maintain sales momentum and expand to certain markets. As an established product, the iPhone is seen by experts as needing more than just publicity to drive sales and may be switched to a subsidized model, particularly in China and other countries whose carriers may reject any revenue sharing deals outright.

Regardless of how accurate the calls may be, the true extent of any alleged change in business models is likely to be felt in June, when most expect Apple to introduce its long-awaited 3G iPhone model and give local carriers an opportunity to formally unveil their own plans.

iPhones selling at cheapest prices ever

So what is it that could undercut the price of the most hyped cell phone ever?

It turns out an even newer iPhone. With the still semi secret 3G iPhone set to hit the marketplace this summer; mobile operaters with iPhone exclusives are scrambling to sell their existing inventory before it becomes obsolete.

See when European vendors saw the stateside splash the iPhone was making last summer, they over ordered for their own regions, and stand to lose a lot of money. So to cut their loses O2 in England just sliced the price of a first generation iPhone unit from £269 to £169; and in Germany, T-Mobile will sell you their €399 (£319) iPhone for €99.

Despite the slightly poor showing for the original iPhone; the 3G version is expected to make a bigger impact in the European marketplace, where the speedier 3G is more readily available.

LG KH1800 Orange color phone, do you think it is ugly?

LG have a new mobile phone called the LG KH1800 or also known as the “Orange Color Phone” for the Korean market, what is funny it does have little bits of orange on it but most of it is black.

The handset has a 1 megapixel camera and is 13.3mm thick; it does have 3G roaming capability which should be good enough for a few people. The South Koreans can get their hands on the Orange color phone for 352,000 won (about $372).

Snoop Dogg does the bizzle for Orange's mobile shizzle

It's the battle of the A-list giants. Yesterday, 3 promoted a new mobile game by hiring Gemma Atkinson to pose for photographs in a miniscule grid-girl outfit. Today, Orange announces that it's got Snoop Dogg starring in its new cinema advert. Sorry 3, you lose this time.

Sadly, Orange's ad still has those unfunny marketing executives in it - the plot this time is they get into a fight with Snoop's crew after trying to get him to change his lyrics to promote Orange: "Mr Dogg, if you could replace the line - I'm giving mad love by riding with the honeys with - gonna pick up my mobile, gonna make some off-peak calls!"

Anyway, if I worked for Vodafone or T-Mobile, I'd be putting in calls to Tom Cruise, Michael Jackson and The Queen RIGHT NOW to try and get tomorrow's headlines. What an ad that would be, too.

Samsung's 5 megapixel G600 cameraphone - IN PINK!!

Now, THANK GOD, there's no need to sacrifice a shade of Pepto-Bismol for superior snapping on your camera phone. Samsung has announced that they've got the first 5 megapixel camera phone, based on their successful G600 model (which it kind of looks like they kept the top panel of...).

It's got a massive 2.2-inch display, as well as MP3 functionality. As exciting as this is, it's slightly undermined by the fact that Samsung has since announced the G800, which is the first camera phone with optical zoom - why couldn't we have that one in pink?

Orange has sold 30,000 iPhones in France

France Telecom has announced that their Orange division in France has already sold around 30,000 iPhones to the French mobile community since its launch last week.
While this figure seems meager in comparison to the 270,000 that sold in the first two days of the US release, the economic and mobile population numbers made a difference.
