Download : HTC Touch HD firmware update now online

Yesterday a new Touch HD update appeared which promises to fix multiple browsing issues and title-bar flicker. It also speeds up GPS lock, updates the "Connnection Setup" database and there's improved emergency call handling when you're in Airplane Mode.

This is a generic update, so you'll only be able to update your handset if you bought it unlocked from the likes of devicewire.com etc. As usual we'd recommend backing up your phone-based data, charging your handset over 50% and drinking at least three cups of coffee before starting. Source...

iPhone 2.2 firmware hidden features

While Apple has not yet announced when the recently seeded (to developers) iPhone 2.2 firmware beta will be released to end users, the said firmware version has some pretty interesting featured buried within it.

At least three new features were found buried in the new iPhone 2.2 firmware beta, including Google Maps Street View and a text auto-correction ON/OFF switch.

The built-in Maps application in iPhone 2.2 apparently includes the recently showcased Street View feature on the Android T-Mobile G1. In Street View mode, users can see street level photos of select cities within the Maps application.

A newly added text auto-correction ON/OFF switch was also found hidden in the iPhone 2.2 beta firmware, allowing users to toggle the iPhone’s keyboard auto-correction, uh, on or off. This has been one of the most-demanded features on the iPhone ever since users outside of the U.S. realized how painful it is to bear with the keyboard as it changed each and every typewritten word into one in the English language.

Finally, support for Japanese emoji icons is another new feature in iPhone 2.2, and it is said that it will help in the slow iPhone adoption in Japan.

What's the Release date of Windows Mobile 7 ?

Bad news for all who anticipated the release of Windows Mobile 7. First they said it will arrive early of 2009 but now they have officially announced that their release date would be delayed. Why? We can not answer that but many speculations arise that they still want to develop it some more to compete with the Google Android.
The Windows Mobile 7 is said to focus on touchscreen and motion gesture so it could compete with the iPhone but with the latest addition to their competitors, guess they would need to reinvent something spectacular so they'd get the most votes so to speak.
So, when can we expect the Windows Mobile 7 to be released? Microsoft said that they will move its release by either on the middle or end of next year. That will definitely hurt Microsoft especially because many people were anticipating to see what Microsoft got to offer in the "now" more highly competitive business.
Surely they have thought about this and instead of forcing to stick with their planned release date, they decided to sacrifice that and get a beating perhaps because they want to blow us away with their latest version of Windows Mobile. Who knows really. Perhaps they made the right choice to keep us waiting and amaze us with the latest version rather than sticking with the schedule and disappoint everyone. SOurce...

First look at BlackBerry OS 5.0

Remember when we first mentioned OS 5.0 nearly one and a half years ago? Yes, it’s been that long. Although that version matured into what we now know as OS 4.5, earlier this year, we broke the story about the formal introduction of OS 5.0 within the walls of Waterloo. Many revisions and version updates later, including a few different creative direction changes — we now have OS 4.6.0 (Bold and Pearl Flip), as well as the upcoming OS 4.6.1 (Javelin/8900 and 8350i) and OS 4.7.0 (Storm) — OS 4.5.0 still hasn’t been officially released in the United States, home of RIM’s largest user base. Hit the jump for the full run down!

So what do we have for you? Yes, that’s right, OS 5.0 for the BlackBerry Curve. For those of you who have looked on enviously at the slick-looking ’Clock’ application on the Bold and Pearl Flip, you will one day be able to have this rather simple Alarm-replacement application on your last generation device. You can throw in the accessibility options and most of the other features found in OS 4.6, as well.

One new feature we noticed was the “Files” application. Although it doesn’t appear to work, this new feature appears to add network share access, which has been a fairly popular request for a number of years. Assuming that BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0 will likely be available by the time OS 5.0 is available, we will make the assumption that this will be a new server-client feature. Let’s just hope none of us are sporting walking canes by that time. You know, RIM kind of has a bad track record when it comes to release dates…

To be honest though, having been on a BlackBerry Bold for a few weeks now, this new OS seems a bit underwhelming at this point. Granted, this is a fairly early beta and has a long way to go in the life cycle process (it is good to see RIM working on this version prior to wrapping up OS 4.5), so there’s still time to really “WOW!” each and every one of us. However, until that time, we think this version should currently be considered OS 4.6 for the Curve. Source...

Apple updates iPhone 3G, iPod Classic , iPod Nano, iPod Touch and iTunes at Keynote September 2008

Steve Jobs has unveiled Apples revamped media player range for the crucial Christmas sales period and announced a major software update for the iPhone. Speaking to a packed press conference Jobs announced that the iPhone would get a major software upgrade on Friday, which he promised would deal with many of the issues plaguing the device, including reducing dropped calls, extending the battery life and making backing up to iTunes much easier.
It fixes a lot of bugs, he said.
Its a big one for the iPhone.
Application sales for the iPhone have also been a massive success he said. So far 100 million applications have been downloaded for the iPhone and Touch, which is remarkable as the applications store has only been open for 60 days.

The iPod range is also getting a revamp. The thicker version of the iPod Classic is being dropped due to poor demand Jobs said and the updated slim version would hold 120GB and cost $249.
The Nano has been completely redesigned and is the thinnest Nano yet, with an oval rather than a rectangular design. It has an accelerometer attached and has a larger screen.
New applications have been added, including shuffling songs by shaking the device and automatic reimaging of the screen when the device is turned.
Battery life has been improved, so that it gives 24 hours of music playback or four hours of video. It will come in eight colours and models available include an 8GB player for $149 and a 16GB for $199.
The Touch device has also been made slimmer and has improved battery life to give 36 hours of music and six hours of video playback. It now also has external volume controls and an external speaker.
The new Touch will come in three versions: 8GB for $229, 16GB for $299 and 32GB for $399.
Jobs also made it clear that the Touch is being repositioned as a mobile gaming platform. A special version of the Spore game has been created for it and other games are in development.
The iTunes software has also been upgraded, with a tweaked user interface and a new application called Genius, which automatically generates playlists of similar music. These playlists are also uploaded anonymously to iTunes to improve the Genius algorithm.
Jobs also announced that the iTunes store would begin to sell high definition (HD) content from today and that NBC had returned to selling its programs on the service.
To date the iTunes store has 65 million customer accounts, 8.5 million songs, 30,00 TV shows and 2,600 movies he said, making it the number one music distributor in the US.
Jobs also addressed concerns expressed by environmental groups over the environmental safety of its consumer products line.
We want to be very environmentally concerned with these products, he said.
We want to reduce the amount of packaging but the biggest thing we worry about are toxins.
The new range will contain no PVCs, non-arsenic glass and BFRs. The bodies will be totally recyclable.
After much speculation about his health one of the first slides he presented was a quote from Mark Twain:
The reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated.
Enough said, he commented to applause.
Steve Wozniak was at the launch and while he wasnt talking to the press seemed well satisfied with the new product line. Source...
