Upcoming iPhone 3.0 New Features & Preview

The iPhone event just ended, and the upcoming iPhone 3.0 software update adds lots of new Feature in upcoming iPhone. Apple announced over 100 new features for the iPhone 3.0 software. Most importantly, these new features included three of the big ones that people have been waiting for: Copy and paste, MMS and search.

Here are some of the new and Upcoming Features of iPhone:-
  • Copy and Paste:- Now You can also copy and paste photos. Now you will be able to select multiple photos by tapping the action button, copy some of them, and paste them in an email, ready to send.
  • Peer to Peer:- Apple said. That will enable the discovery service, used to allow gamers to participate in multiplayer titles for example, to work without disconnecting from WiFi internet, without needing any configuration, and without requiring mobile network access.
  • Landscape keyboard:- Apple has added the landscape keyboard mode to other applications, like Mail, SMS, and Notes.
  • Push Notification:- A feature that allows developers to send push notifications of updates without the cost of running the app in the background.
  • Search in Mail, Calendar, and iPod :- These Apple applications have specific search interfaces. The search in Mail doesn’t support the message content yet, but it supports searching in IMAP servers—that will save a lot of time logging into Gmail.
  • MMS Messaging:- MMS is better known to some as picture/video messaging. While you will now be able to send picture messages, video is still a no-go, as it seems that Apple still isn’t providing a way to use the iPhone’s camera to encode video in the new SDK. But along with pictures, you will also be able to send contact information, audio and location data. The latter could be very useful for some of the location-based apps.
  • Spotlight Search:- Spotlight is the name of the searching utility in the Mac OS X operating system, and now it works on the iPhone as well to search across your device. You can search for things in mail (including mail on a server), search for things in notes, search for music and finally you can search for application — something which those of us with the maximum 148 applications on our iPhones will be very grateful for.
  • Shake to shuffle music:- If you are in your iPod application, you just need to shake it to start the shuffling mode. Hopefully this will be optional for sports people out there.
  • Others:-
Stocks: You can now get news headlines about certain stocks within the Stocks app.Stereo Bluetooth: Perhaps one day we’ll see the little white ear buds go wireless, after all.

Notes sync: Thank God. It was just silly that you couldn’t do this previously, now taking notes on the iPhone will actually be useful.

YouTube accounts: You will now finally be able to sign in to your YouTube account in the app, which will allow you to save and rate videos.

The new software will be free for existing iPhone owners and $9.95 for iPod touch users. Even owners of the original iPhone will be able to get the new 3.0 software, but two of the features: MMS and AD2P will not work on that device.

iPhone SDK tutorial - simple RSS reader

The Apple Blog recently posted a simple SDK tutorial for the iPhone that walks you through the steps for creating a little RSS reader. It's pretty cool in that it's one step above a Hello World app - it performs a real world function, but doesn't get too bogged down in features and details that would detract from its usefulness as a beginner howto.

When you're done with the howto, you'll know how to create an Objective-C iPhone project in Xcode, use the NSXMLParser class, and properly allocate and deallocate memory at runtime.

iPhone 2.0.1 software released

We’re downloading it now, but woweee, it’s 250MB! Anyone care to comment? Even with all the languages included the biggest build we’ve ever seen was around 210MB…

Post will be updated

Ok, so far we’ve found 2.0.1 to be extremely more stable. This includes fixing the keyboard lag some users experienced, a speedier OS in general, and it seems to have fixed the god-awful contacts lag. Also we should note that applications install probably 10x faster now through iTunes. We’ve heard reports of a speedier backup as well. Good things all around. Just no copy and paste. Sad. Source...

iPhone 3G Launch Date Confirmed

There have been rumors aplenty. In fact, everyday everybody seems to say the same thing: They’ve sighted the 3G iPhone, 3G iPhone is arriving tomorrow and whatever other 3G iPhone news people can think of. This time, someone apparently very close to the 3G iPhone launch has said that Apple will announce their new model at the WWDC Keynote on June 9th. This new model will also bring new sales policies in some countries.

In Spain, for example, the 3G iPhone will be available for sale at the June 18th grand opening of Telefonica's megastore—an Apple Store-like shop located in the company's historical building in Madrid's Gran Vía— with nationwide availability the next day or after a few hours. The other European countries with iPhone availability will have similar launch schedules.

According to another source involved in the launch, the 3G iPhone will no longer be available at a fixed price point—at least in some countries, and its launch will also bring new sales policies, although these have not been completely specified yet.

The iPhone has clearly been “the phone to beat” for the past 12 months, as evidenced by every other phone doing its best to copy its user interface, as well as others trying to copy its design. Hopefully the new 3G iPhone will create another level (again?) and spur mobile phone development even further.

iPhone software v2.0 to allow saving of web images

Discoveries made within leaked versions of Apple Inc.'s upcoming iPhone 2.0 software update show the company is actively narrowing the gap in functionality between its mobile and computer-based applications.

The most recent example comes by way of Gizmodo, which recently discovered that the mobile version of Safari due to ship as part of the update will allow users to save web images to their handset's photo album.
"We tried and it works: just hold your finger against an image for a longer time than usual and the popup dialog will appear," the gadget site reported. Once saved, the images can be used as background images, mailed to friends, or used as custom contact icons.

Similarly, findings published last week show Apple is also working to improve the functionality of its mobile address book and iCal applications, brining them closer to spec with versions shipping on the latest Macs.

Specifically, iPhones updated with the upcoming software update will gain access to a contact search function, as well as the ability to issue iCal meeting invitations.

iPhone software v2.0 is due to ship in late June, the same time Apple plans to take the wraps off its App Store -- a new application for the iPhone and iPod touch that will serve up third-party applications that have been authorized for distribution by the Cupertino-based electronics maker.

GPS solution for the Apple iPhone from Simba: video

Simba is the latest Apple iPhone developer to get down and cosy with GPS, they are showing off their beta GPS solution for the ever popular iPhone. There is a video of the Simba iPhone solution below which shows off the Simba GPS software with accessible satellites, heading/combination display, and of course GoogleMaps.

It appears the Simba GPS dongle is still in development, however, the most impostant thing is that it is working. So all that is really needed now is to see just how Simba approach Apple’s iPhone developer program. We know Apple doesn’t allow any mess with the iPhone dock connector; however the release of iPhone PwnageTool does open up possibilities of 3rd party add-ons.

Third iPhone beta SDK is live

Good news iPhone developer boys and girls. A brand new iPhone Beta SDK just went live. This is release #3 of the SDK for those of you who have been keeping count. No word yet as to what changes this new SDK brings but we're betting on two things: First, that it re-vitalizes all those PSOD iPhones and second that it will fix all those user 501 errors we've been hearing about from ticked-off developers.

The new release is reportedly just 1.4 GB--thinner than honking 2+GB initial first release.

Have you downloaded and installed the new SDK? Let us know what you've found. Drop us a note in the comments. Want anonymity? Our tipline is the best bet for super sekrit tips. Make sure you tell us to guard your identity.

New Build of iPhone 2.0 Beta

There is a brand new build of iPhone 1.2 from Apple - also known as 2.0 beta to developers. As with any other new build, you will find fixes to problems found in previous releases, including a Contact.app icon that appears on the home screen. Parental controls cannot be used to control both the AppStore and iTunes store, while there is no need for iSIM anymore since the iPhone will be able to import directly from your SIM card. New languages such as French, German, Nederlands, Italian, Spanish, Portugues, Dansk, Suomi, Norsk Bokmal, and Svenska among others have also been included to widen its appeal, while Mail, Contacts, and Calender are all grouped into the Preferences category.

Android vs. iPhone - a battle royal of SDKs

Rich Miner is the Group Manager for Mobile Platforms at Google and he thinks that Android will outsell the iPhone. I'm not saying it won't, I mean they have 4 device manufacturers to Apple's one.

hello_world_8

But, I just don’t think Android has near the hype around it that the iPhone does, lets say Apple drops a brand new, completely redone 3G iPhone with 32GB of storage, actual GPS, and a few other new features to make it, with respect to hardware, as close to the same as the optimal Android phone, save for the developers and Linux fanboys, which one do you think people are going to buy? Even if you do it fairly and exclude Apple developers and Apple fanboys Apple would probably still sell more.

Anyways, Google is bragging about their 750k SDK downloads since last November while Apple is bragging about 100k SDK downloads on the first day (and it was only half of a day at that). Lastly, Google is talking about all the capabilities of the Android SDK that the iPhone has, and that’s probably true, but in the end its Motorola, LG, Samsung, and HTC’s amazing devices that are really going to push the sales of Android phones, not so much the software itself, except for with the first official Android phone out. If Apple releases a 3G iPhone and HTC (likely to be the first) releases a decent Android phone at the same time, I’d probably buy the iPhone first, but I’d get around to buying the HTC too.

Apple iPhone gains Crazy Kart 2 mobile game: video

Int13 the France based mobile game developer has begun posting their Crazy Kart 2 game to the iPhone. As far as details go, mobile users can expect 320×320 pixels playing area, 3 vehicle classes which are karts, hovercrafts and motorbikes, 6 character with differing vehicles, on-screen steering wheel, WiFi online multiplayer mode with up to four players, and downloadable content such as new tracks and vehicles.

Int13 say the game, which was originally developed for Symbian and Windows Mobile platforms wasn’t that difficult to adapt to suit the Apple iPhone. Although Int13 are still evaluating alternatives such as landscape display support and tilt control.

Even now the people at Int13 are developing a sequel with full 3D accelerate engine which will be exclusively designed for the Apple handset. Crazy Kart 2 is scheduled for release in July, so until then take a look at the video so see what it’s like.

PosiMotion GPS for iPhone connects by WiFi not Bluetooth

While Apple’s iPhone SDK will give far more official flexibility for third-party developers, there are still limitations on what functionality coders will be able to take advantage of. Not permitting background processes is one of the better known restrictions, but Apple has also said that third-party software will not be able to access the dock connector or Bluetooth either. It’s forced companies to come up with clever solutions for getting their peripherals to talk with the iPhone; Gadgetell spoke with PosiMotion, whose G-FI GPS for iPhone product will use WiFi to funnel positioning data into the cellphone.

PosiMotion GPS for iPhone

Gadgetell: To me, it would seem very risky to build something Apple may not allow, how do you minimize this risk?

PosiMotion: We are in the process of gaining Apple product certification

Set to release this Summer, the G-FI receiver will apparently be compatible with both the iPhone and iPod Touch, and come with software based on the official SDK for both devices. G-FI will also be compatible with other WiFi enabled devices, such as laptops.

Using WiFi rather than the more traditional Bluetooth to circumnavigate Apple’s restrictions is also the tactic of PacketVideo, whose TV tuner will use the wireless networking standard to send mobile TV to the iPhone.

How much does Apple care that "iPhone 2.0" has been hacked already?

Just a week after Apple launched the iPhone SDK, it's been hacked.Pretty fast going, but unsurprising.Let's not think that Apple didn't see this coming a mile off.

Given the speed with which the original iPhone firmware was hacked to allow third-party applications, and to release it from the exclusive mobile network carriers, Apple knew that exactly the same thing would happen when the SDK launched.

Apple continually says all the right things to appease the networks it has exclusive contracts with, but the company has always known that keeping tight controls on the iPhone would encourage underground software development.

Now that the official SDK has been unveiled, Apple knows that the hackers who have put firmware version 2.0 on the iPhone will likely develop at a much faster rate than "official" developers.

The likes of Electronic Arts, AOL, Sega, Namco, PopCap, Six Apart, and other big name developers -- plus a host of smaller independent ones -- will develop applications, have them approved by Apple, and sell them through iTunes. They get exposure to a mass of "ordinary" iPhone users, and Apple gets 30% of any revenue generated.

"Underground" developers will create a host of apps not sanctioned by Apple, and distribute them via the same channels they already do.

There's room for both, and Apple knows that.

It's true that a huge number of iPhones sold have not been activated -- which means they're being used in unsupported countries and networks -- but let's not forget that the majority of iPhone users are "well-behaved" customers who do everything the way that Apple originally intended. They use the exclusive carrier in their country (AT&T, O2, T-Mobile, Orange), and upgrade their iPhone's software via iTunes. They use the built-in and Safari-based applications, and are generally quite happy.

Many don't know or care that their phone can be jailbroken -- not everyone wants to get involved with hacking their iPhone and many just don't care how "open" or "closed" it is. Hackers' and everyday consumers' core needs are poles apart.

Hacked iPhones may lose Apple ongoing revenue, but the hype and free marketing machines continue to motor along with no cost to the company.

Does Apple care that the latest hacks may unlock a batch of iPhones, possibly irretrievably? I don't think so. There's enough room for everyone to play the iPhone just the way they want to.

Apple's iPhone SDK sees 100,000 downloads in four days

Apple said Wednesday that more than 100,000 iPhone developers have downloaded the beta iPhone Software Development Kit (SDK) in the first four days since its launch on March 6

The iPhone SDK provides developers with the same rich set of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) and tools that Apple uses to create its native applications for iPhone and iPod touch.

"Developer reaction to the iPhone SDK has been incredible with more than 100,000 downloads in the first four days," said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. "Also, over one million people have watched the launch video on Apple.com, further demonstrating the incredible interest developers have in creating applications for the iPhone.”

Last Thursday, Apple also previewed the new App Store, a way for developers to wirelessly deliver their applications to every iPhone and iPod touch user. Developers set the price for their applications—including free—and retain 70 percent of all sales revenues.

Leading developers such as AOL, Electronic Arts, Epocrates, salesforce.com and Sega have already demonstrated applications using the SDK, and developer response continues to be strong with more developers embracing the platform, according to Apple.

"Apple’s become an important mobile game platform with the iPhone SDK," said Jason Kapalka, co-founder and Chief Creative Officer, PopCap. "The new SDK gives us the tools to innovate and reinvent games like Bejeweled, Zuma and Peggle. With the new App Store we can reach every iPhone and iPod touch user on the planet."

The free beta iPhone SDK is available immediately worldwide and can be downloaded at Apple's developer website. The iPhone Developer Program will initially be available in the US and will expand to other countries in the coming months, Apple said.

A QuickTime video of the iPhone roadmap event remains available here, in both standard and high-definition formats.

The iPhone App Store

Today, Steve Jobs announced the App Store to go along with all of the SDK fun that's soon to begin. Available in the iPhone 2.0 software update, the App Store will allow for easy navigation of both paid and free apps; Featured, Just Added, Staff Favorites, Most Popular ... it's basically an iPhone version of Apple Downloads. You'll be able to search, tap and download applications wirelessly to your iPhone (and iPod touch for a nominal fee) via WiFi or cellular. You'll also be able to install apps via iTunes.

Developers will be able to sell their apps in the App Store, and can set their own price. They'll receive a monthly payment of 70% of sales, with 30% going to Apple for their credit card, hosting and marketing services. There are no additional costs for listing apps, after the $99 setup fee.

Quite predictably excluded from listing in the App Store are pornography and malicious applications. I have absolutely no witty comment to make about that. It's common sense.

Coming to iPhone: Instant Messenger, EA's Spore, SEGA games

During its iPhone Software Roadmap event on Thursday, Apple invited several developers on stage to demonstrate work-in-progress versions of some of the first third-party native iPhone applications that included Instant Messenger (AOL), Spore (EA Games), and Super Monkey Ball (SEGA).

AIM for iPhone

One of the most warmly received announcements came from AOL, which managed to develop a working version of its Instant Messenger software for the iPhone after having been provided with a beta of the iPhone SDK just two weeks ago.

The application includes a full featured Buddy List that integrates with Address Book and the iPhone's contact list, displaying the name, status and icon of each buddy. It also supports multiple simultaneous conversations. Switching between them requires just a 'swipe' across the iPhone's touch-screen.

"No question the powerful tools and APIs in the iPhone SDK made it easy to develop a feature-rich mobile application for the iPhone," said Kevin Conroy, executive vice president, AOL. "The rapid development cycle for this application was very intuitive, and when you add the App Store, it’s an unbeatable combination for development and distribution of mobile applications."

Via a new application programming interface (API) offered as part of the iPhone SDK, applications like the AIM client are able to interface with the iPhone's Photo Library. As such, users can select custom buddy list icons from their iPhone's Photo Library or create one on the spot via the handset's built-in camera.

EA's Spore and SEGA's Super Monkey Ball

On another front, it became clear that the iPhone's built-in three-axis accelerometer is going to unleash a new chapter in handheld gaming unparalleled by anything in the industry thus far. Apple began by demonstrating a Photo editing application that lets users "undo" changes simply by shaking the iPhone like an "etch a sketch." EA Games' Travis Boatman was then introduced to perform a demo of "Spore" on the iPhone, also ported to iPhone in just two weeks. Like the photo editing app, game-play is based purely on tilting and maneuvering the orientation of the handset.

"The animation technology in the iPhone OS enables us to build awesome games,” said EA chief executive John Riccitiello. "I think iPhone consumers are going to be blown away by the games we create for this platform."

Similarly, SEGA's Ethan Einhorn showed off a version of his firm's Super Monkey Ball title that leveraged the iPhone's Accelerometer, and like Spore was also ported to the handset within two weeks. To move the monkey around the screen, all players have to do is tilt the iPhone.

"It's gonna be really hard to go back to a traditional game controller," he said.

Salesforce.com and Epocrates

Also demonstrating applications at the SDK event were representatives from Salesforce.com and PDA medical software developer Epocrates.

Salesforce demonstrated an application -- written by a single developer in less than two weeks -- that will allow sales representatives to view graphical representations of their monthly sales goals on the iPhone. Chuck Dietrich, who spoke on behalf of the company, said the iPhone SDK will allow his firm to repurpose data for the iPhone, which could then be distributed wirelessly to those sales reps.

Shortly after, Glenn Keighley of Epocrates demonstrated a new medical reference application for the iPhone that will allow physicians to reference and identify various different kinds of medicines (pills).

New iPhone Apps

"By putting so much computing power into such an elegant mobile device, Apple has opened up tremendous opportunities for application developers,” said Kirk Loevner, Epocrates's chairman and CEO. “The technology and software in the iPhone OS will allow us to create new and innovative applications that help improve patient safety and provide healthcare professionals with an unsurpassed user experience."

Available only on the Apple App Store

All these applications and hundreds more will be distributed exclusively via Apple's new App Store beginning in June. The App Store application will ship as part of iPhone Software 2.0 and allow users to download and install applications and games wirelessly over EDGE or WiFI, Apple said, or via iTunes on a Mac or PC.

New iPhone Apps

New iPhone Apps

The store's landing page will feature the Top 50 most popular applications and include a search function for the remainder of the offerings. Developers must register with Apple ($99 fee) to obtain a digital certificate and the right to publish their games on the store. Developers will set the price of there applications and see 70 percent of the proceeds from sales while Apple will garner the remaining 30 percent to cover server, marketing and other costs.

There will be a slight vesting period between the time developers submit their applications to Apple for inclusion on the App Store and when they are actually made available for download, said Apple Vice President of Worldwide Marketing, Phil Schiller, who declined to elaborate further.
