Hands-on with Motorola’s Z10 dream phone

That’s right–the Z10 is a dream phone, right up there with the N95 8GB and the (hacked) iPhone. You may not have heard much about this phone, but it’s the follow up to the very cool Z8 which unfortunately never made its way to the U.S.. We will be seeing the Z6 on Verizon some time in the first half (probably) of 2008.

The Z10 uses Motorola’s “kick slider” mechanism which bends the phone to fit your face as it slides out. It’s very much a cooler version of the Z8 and has an incredible metallic finish and a brilliant sliding mechanism. Aside from looking great the big news with the phone is that it has built-in video editing capabilities which go hand-in-hand with the on-board 3.2MP camera.

The technologies behind the phone include UMTS 2100, HSDPA 3.6Mbps, and quadband GSM/GPRS/EDGE. It runs a 2.2″ QVGA display and it’s got to have some serious power onboard to handle that video work. It’s a 3.5G phone that is future-proofed to work with up to a 32GB micro-SD card so you can store a whole lot of those videos you chopped up and put back together. It’s a Symbian-based phone and it does not have a QWERTY keypad, but it’s got some serious power and some great features.

The Motorola booth was way too packed to get any serious impressions, but I got some great hands-on time with the phone. It’s a great form factor with some smart design and that “banana slide” which is just what we need to get sliders up to date. I’m not too hopeful about ever actually owning this phone (living in the United States and all…) but it makes me happy to see that Motorola is pumping out some solid designs.
