the Kwame Kilpatrick/ Christine Beatty affair text messages

I've heard of a damning text message before but 14,000 of them?

Kwame Kilpatrick, the mayor of Detroit and his chief of staff Christine Beatty really liked texting each other, but then again, they really liked doing a lot of things together. Friends in high school, partners in politics; their romance would have seemed really sweet if it didn't involve adultery and perjury.

See Kilpatrick and Beatty were married to different people, and when one of the policeman in Kilpatrick's detail blew the whistle on the relationship in 2002, it sent off a chain of events that culminated in the whistle blower and lead investigator Gary Brown no longer having jobs.

While Kilpatrick maintained in court that Brown voluntarily retired, the uncovering of those 14,000 text messages, with such unambiguous admissions such as "we are going through this mess because of a decision that we made to fire Gary Brown," pretty much sealing the couple's fate. Kilpatrick agreed to pay the two fired cops $2 million over the $6.5 million jury verdict in their favor. Meanwhile for Beatty, the trial led to divorce and her resigning her position. The threat of perjury charges, both for lying about the firings and nature of their relationship still linger for both.
Anyway, here’s an except of the tale tale text messages; the lesson being it’s not just a paper trail that leaves a paper trail anymore.
