Timbaland to release world’s first mobile only album

With CD sales plummeting and ringtone sales skyrocketing, a major star trying this idea was probably inevitable.

Timberland has just signed a deal with Verizon Wireless to release what they’re claiming is the world’s first mobile only album. The way it works is the songs would come out at a pace of one song a month through Verizon’s V Cast network, and after an entire album’s worth of material has amassed, they’ll repackage the work as a mobile only album. Each track will be offered for $1.99 and V Cast will also stream behind-the-scenes video documenting the recording process.

The mobile tracks will be transferable to a computer, a device the music industry might soon be referring to as “old media”.
