How to reformat your iPhone before getting rid of it

What? Get rid of your iPhone? Perish the thought! But hang on: next month, Apple is releasing the shiny new 3G iPhone, which is sure to send many of the early adopters who bought the original model back to their nearest Apple or O2 store to trade up. Expect to see a lot of first-gen iPhones being passed on to friends and family, or flogged on eBay.There’s a problem though. Reports this week have pointed out how easy it is to restore the data of whoever owned an iPhone before you - including potentially sensitive emails and other info. To prevent this before getting rid of yours, you need to wipe all those details, but it’s not as easy as you’d think.Thankfully, this article explains how to do it properly. And it’s quite complicated - you have to restore the phone within iTunes, uncheck all the Sync options, then create a bunch of playlists as large as your iPhone’s memory, and sync them, so it’s full of music rather than personal data. I can’t help thinking it would’ve been easier for Apple to include a proper memory wipe feature…
