State-owned carrier, MTNL, is currently testing 3G services in New Delhi. The tests are being conducted around the Connaught Place area in Central Delhi and the carrier plans to launch its 3G services before the end of this year. The government had allocated one block of spectrum to MTNL in Delhi and Mumbai, and to BSNL for the rest of the country ahead of private carriers, which will bid for spectrum in an e-auction sometime later this year. MTNL is currently installing 750,000 lines each in Delhi and Mumbai for providing 3G services. Eventually, it plans to expand this capacity two million.
According to speculations, BSNL and MTNL might also offer the iPhone 3G along with its 3G services later this year, making them the third carrier to offer the device in India and the first one to offer 3G services to utilise the iPhone's 3G capablities. Source...
