Those tricky guys over at XDA-Developers have come up with the goods once again. This time their target was the HTC Touch Diamond, and what they have managed to do is give people in North America, and other markets that rely on the 850MHz GSM band, a fighting chance with the device.
By replacing the GSM/UMTS radio's firmware, while leaving the rest of the device in tact, users can unlock the hidden 4th GSM band support that is laying dormant in most versions of the Touch Diamond. Don't mistake this for meaning that software can add support for new network bands, because it can't. This ability was there all along, it just isn't supported by most versions of the Touch Diamond firmware.
The process isn't necessarily for the faint of heart, and there is some risk, but I can offer that I saw it work personally. Would-be firmware flashers should read the appropriate HTC Touch Diamond thread on XDA-Developers.com. Source...
