Don't get me wrong, a national text messages alert system makes sense in theory, but do we really want this technology in the hands in the same fear mongering politicians who put us on Orange Alert every time their approval ratings dip too low? Here's how it works: The Federal Communications System would set up a text alert systems for three different kinds of emergencies; Presidential messages, signifying a terrorist attack or a natural disaster; imminent threats, such as hurricanes or campus shooting sprees, and an Amber Alert for child abduction cases.
The system will be opt in for carriers and an opt out option for cell phone users, though the service will likely be free of charge.
Which is fine except if you look closely at the explanations of what the “Presidential warnings” and “imminent threats” texts are for; they’re exactly the same thing. Leading me to believe this is another tool for political posturing, not something that is actually meant to inform the general public.
