Apparently you can’t. One of the interesting aspects to the Kwame Kilpatrick text message scandal, where the mayor of Detroit and his chief-of-staff/ mistress were caught lying, via long discarded text messages is that while you can erase a message from your cell phone, that doesn’t mean the cell phone company is erasing it from their records. Steve Hall of the FBI explains:“Hall says phone companies have the technology and the equipment to store everyone's phone history .. And the FBI has the power to to subpeona those records.”
Meaning if you want to cheat on your wife or do something illegal you’d better use some old school technology, because if you try to use text messages, as Kwame Kilpatrick and Eliot Spitzer found out, your hand is going to get caught in the virtual cookie jar.
