iPhone News Roundup - With a rebel yell, Apple cries, “more, more, more!”

More memory
This big news this week is, of course, the new iPhone and iPod touch models with double the memory for an extra hundred bucks each. But what some sales people may not tell you is that you DO NOT have to extend your contract to upgrade your current device to the one with more memory. The official word from AT&T is that you do have to sign a new contract, but it will be back dated to the original start date of your plan. So don’t let some quota-starved salesperson tell you otherwise. Just get your new iPhone, update your account through iTunes and you’re all set, no contract extension required.

More market share
The latest research shows that Apple’s iPhone now commands more U.S. market share than any other smartphone except for RIM’s BlackBerry. In Q4 of ‘07 the iPhone surged to a 28% share of the converged device market behind RIM’s 41%, but absolutely spanking Palm’s 9% share and even beating the total market share of all Windows Mobile devices combined at 21%. Vegas isn’t taking bets on whether or not Apple will take first place in 2008, but rather when. What month do you think iPhone will beat it’s competitors this year?

More bandwidth
AT&T plans to expand 3G wireless broadband to more than 80 additional cities in 2008, laying the groundwork for an updated iPhone. Is iPhone 2.0 coming soon?
