How to hack your Nokia N95 Phone Display ?

Someone has decided to replace the Nokia N95’s display with a portable TV. Watch the video after the jump!

Dec 8, 2007

What does a hacked iPhone or iPod touch look like?

It could look like pretty much anything, even The Matrix (as shown here), it all depends on the owner. The look and feel of the hacked iPhone and iPod touch interface is completely customizable, not to mention you can install any combination of 3rd party apps on it which are all available through the latest Installer.app. Take a peak at what current users are doing with their hacked devices at this great Flickr pool of hacked iPhone screenshots.

There are hundreds to click through, so if you have a Flash-enabled browser we recommend viewing the slideshow. This way you can kick back with some pretzels and beer while you contemplate taking the red pill, or the blue pill.

Jailbreak your iPhone or iPod touch with a single tap

This new one tap hack is so easy a caveman can do it. It opens your iPhone or iPod touch and installs Installer.app so you can add any 3rd party apps of your choice. This is the by far the easiest way to add 3rd party apps to your iPhone or iPod touch. Here’s how.
Point your iPhone or iPod touch to jailbreakme.com (the link is below)
Read the instructions, scroll down, and tap the button
Now wait up to 30 seconds for the slide-to-unlock screen to appear
After you slide-to-unlock, then you will see a new Installer.app icon on your home screen.

Go to Jailbreakme.com to hack your device now.

Stream your iPhone or iPod touch music from any iTunes

This is totally cool! You can easily stream the music off of your iPhone or iPod touch to any computer running iTunes. We tell you how in five easy steps.
Jailbreak your device (we recommend this one-tap hack)
Run Installer.app from your home screen
Go to the Resources tab in Installer.app, tap ‘Edit’ then ‘Add’
Type ‘http://home.mike.tl/iphone’ as a new resource
Refresh your repositories then go to the ‘Install’ tab of Intaller.app
Find ‘Firefly Media Server’ and install it

Make sure your firewall settings allow communication and enable “Look for shared library” in your iTunes sharing preferences. Now your iPhone or iPod touch music library will show up as a Shared library in iTunes (the default iPhone password is ‘dottie’, the iPod touch password is ‘alpine’). Stream away.

Alert! iPhone Jailbreaks beware of firmware update 1.1.2

Tomorrow marks the date that the iPhone lands in the U.K. taking with it firmware update 1.1.2. This means a firmware update for all iPhones coming soon to an iTunes near you. If you proudly show off your Jailbroken iPhone with cool 3rd party apps and customization, you need to beware. With the last firmware update, Apple disabled 3rd party apps and even bricked unlocked iPhones.

To keep your hacked iPhone safe, we recommend that you do not update your iPhone to 1.1.2 until hackers release a workaround. You won’t be missing much in this update which contains more languages and access to the Cloud Wi-Fi hotspots in the U.K.

Play classic games from LucasArts on your iPhone and iPod touch

This item is making the rounds on the tech blogs this morning and is making a stop here at Touchtip. Why all the repetition, you ask? That’s like asking, “Why are they making yet another Indiana Jones sequel?“, or “Why did George Lucas have to make Ewoks - The Battle of Endor?” Why? Because a good story doesn’t die. Okay, so maybe the Ewoks should die, but still… a good story, like a good video game, should never end. And now, thanks to ScummVM, we can relive all those classic LucasArts games on our iPhones and iPod touches running true, native emulation.

The ScummVM game emulator does require that you have already Jailbroken your device, but once you do, the installation is a breeze. First you install the ScummVM emulator, then you add the games of your choice. The game choices include the original franchise games for Indiana Jones, Monkey Island, King’s Quest 3, and many others. Sam and Max games are also listed but unfortunately, we’ve hear reports that these games currently experience performance issues. Most of the games, however, run excellent on the iPhone and iPod touch, utilizing the multi-touch interface even better than most of the other games we’ve tested.

To run these classic games on your iPhone or iPod touch, visit the ScummVM Wiki and follow the simple instructions.

iPhone hack - Run 3rd party apps with the new Installer.app 3.0

Installer.app, the leading hack for putting 3rd party apps on your iPhone, has been updated to version 3.0. Apps are now organized into sections making them easier to locate. Installer.app also has added an “Update All” feature along with an improved back-end to manage packaging. The new Installer.app auto detects your firmware version and only displays the 3rd party apps that will run on your iPhone.

To install 3.0 you must install the older version first, then update the installer itself. If you are running firmware 1.1.1, the you will need to jailbreak before you transfer Installer.app manually to your iPhone. Be sure to read the instructions first.

iPod touch owners note that Installer.app is only for the iPhone. For iPod touch hacking you’ll need to use iJailbreak, or wait until early next year when the official SDK is released by Apple.

Integrate the Browser into a Java App - BlackBerry Tips,Trick,Tools & Hacks

Berry 411 is built using a Java client that launches a web browser. This is a powerful and convenient way to build mobile applications.

The Java client provides instant accessibility from the Home screen and a rich native BlackBerry UI. The browser results screen allows for zero-install deployment of new features, easy display of rich text and graphics, and linking to the expanding array of mobile-friendly web content.

The BlackBerry is especially well suited to building this sort of application. The Back button works as expected when going back from a browser page to the client application that launched it. Using the built-in browser network configuration avoids many of the configuration hassles of direct network access, which requires a number of carrier-specific parameters.
Launch the Browser from Java

In this hack, we'll build an application to do reverse phone number lookups, going from a phone number to a name and address. The Java client displays a titlebar and input field, filtered to limit the user's input to 10 digits. When the user selects Search from the menu (see Figure 9-4), the application launches a web page (in this case, an existing Infospace service) to display the results, shown in Figure 9-5.

Figure 9-4. Java client

Figure 9-5. Web results

Even in this very simple form, the hybrid approach has advantages over a pure browser solution. The application launches instantly and has a degree of control over the user's input, which could not be achieved in a browser. It would not be difficult to extend this application to take further advantage of the rich Java client; for example, it could allow the user to select a phone number from his Address Book to look up.
The Code

/**
* Reverse Phone Directory Lookup Application
* This sample uses a Java frontend to prompt the user for a phone
* number, then launches a web page to display the corresponding address.

}
}

}
}

Save the code as BrowserLauncher.jav'a: this is the sole class in this application. The key function is launchBrowser( ), which includes some black magic to launch the user's default browser with the requested URL. The code links to the Infospace reverse directory page, providing the user's input as parameters.
Compile and Run the Application

To compile this code, use the Research In Motion JDE, which you can download from the BlackBerry web site. The code has been successfully tested with Versions 3.7 and 4.0 of the JDE.

Create a new workspace and project in the JDE, and add BrowserLauncher. java to the project. (If you'd like to save yourself the typing, you can download a ZIP archive, including the entire project, from http://thebogles.com/browserlauncher.zip.)

Select "Go" from Debug menu, and the JDE will build the application and launch the BlackBerry simulator, including the application. You should also launch the MDS simulator from the JDE Start menu item to allow the application to access the network.

Once the simulator is launched, you can scroll to the BrowserLauncher application on the Home screen and click on it, by using your mouse scroll-wheel. Type in a listed 10-digit phone number, click on "Search in the menu, and you should see the results displayed in the browser.
Sign and Distribute the Application

Launching the browser is considered a "controlled API" by Research In Motion. To run the application on a real BlackBerry, you will also need to register for a code signing key and sign the application [Hack #98].

Track MDS HTTP Requests - BlackBerry Tips,Trick,Tools & Hacks

Do your users use the Mobile Data Service? How frequently? Do your users go to Internet sites or intranet sites more often? Which sites are visited most?

All these questions are interesting ones that will be different in any environment. The more data you mine from the logs will translate into more knowledge about how your users are using the service and how their experience can be improved. Perhaps an intranet application that you know has not been optimized for the BlackBerry is nevertheless being visited but not fully utilized by your BlackBerry users. You may want to go to the application developer to push for better wireless support in the web application.

You might even see frequent access to various HTTP traffic for online games [Hack #32]. Perhaps you would want to disallow access to these and other non–business related sites.

A single HTTP request in your MDS logs takes up at least 16 lines, and the hostname and the rest of the URL are on different lines. This makes using a simple grep command to extract the URLs impossible. Here is some Perl code that keeps track of HTTP GET requests, reconstructs the original URLs and prints them by the number of requests made to each.

The Code

use strict;

# change the $mds_log variable to your log file
my $mds_log = "BESNAME_MDAT_01_20050607_0002.txt";

my $http_data = {};

open MDS, $mds_log;
while () {
chomp;
my $id = "";
my $host = "";
my $get = "";
if (/EVENT = ReceivedFromDevice/ and
/HTTPTRANSMISSION = Host:([^>]+)>/) {
$host = $1;
($id) = (/CONNECTIONID = (d+),/);
$http_data->{$id}->{host} = $host;
} elsif (/EVENT = SentToServer/ and
/HTTPTRANSMISSION = GET (.+) HTTP/1.1>/) {
$get = $1;
($id) = (/CONNECTIONID = (d+),/);
$http_data->{$id}->{get} = $get;
}
}
close MDS;

my %urls = ();
foreach my $id (keys %{ $http_data }) {
my $host = $http_data->{$id}->{host};
my $get = $http_data->{$id}->{get};
next if not $host and $get;
my $url = "http://$host" . $get;
$urls{$url}++;
}

foreach my $url (sort { $urls{$b} <=> $urls{$a} } keys %urls) {
print "$urls{$url} $url
";
}

Your MDS logs appear with your other BlackBerry logs in the following directory where YYYYMMDD is the current date (assuming you've installed your BES on the C: drive):

C:Program FilesResearch In MotionBlackBerry Enterprise ServerLogsYYYYMMDD

The Mobile Data Service logs will start with your BES name followed by the string MDAT.

BESNAME_MDAT_01_20050607_0002.txt

Type the code into your text editor and save it as site_extract.pl.
Run the Code

Bring up a command prompt, change directory (cd) to the directory where you saved the file, and type the following command to run the script:

C:>perl site_extract.pl

You'll get a list of URLs preceded by the number of instances they appear in your logfile, as shown in the following:

4 http://www.cnn.com/
3 http://dave.runningland.com/index.php
1 http://www.google.com/

You could easily pipe the output to a file and open the data using a spread-sheet program such as Microsoft Excel.

C:>perl site_extract.pl > todays.frequent.sites.txt

Send a Message to a Group of Users - BlackBerry Tips,Trick,Tools & Hacks

Do you have a group of people you'd like to communicate with regularly? Here are some tips for sending email or peer-to-peer (PIN) messages to several addresses.

If you use distribution lists (DLs) to address email in the enterprise, you can use those same DLs to address email to groups of people from your BlackBerry.

Also, it is pretty simple to create and send a PIN message to a person [Hack #27]. You can also include the PINs of several people, if you'd like the same message to go to multiple recipients. That works for an occasional message, but if you have a particular group of people to which you would like to send PIN messages frequently, you'll find yourself getting tired of adding the individual recipients each time you create a message. You cannot use an Address Book group to send PIN messages, but you can still accomplish the task in other ways!
Use Distribution Lists

Any distribution list can be added to your Outlook Contacts in the same manner you would add any other entry from your enterprise Global Address List (GAL). Simply select the name in the GAL or email message, right-click, and select Add to Contacts. When your contacts are synchronized with the Address Book on the handheld, those entries will be copied to your handheld, and therefore can be used to address email from the handheld. Alternatively, if you have a message that was addressed to a distribution list, that has been received on the BlackBerry handheld, you can also use that to save it in your Address Book for future use. Here's how:

Open the messages list.

Open a message that has been addressed to one of the distribution lists you would like to add to your Address Book.

Scroll up to the To line that contains the distribution list.

Click the trackwheel and select Add to Address Book.

The Address Book will open and display the new entry with the email address of the DL prepopulated.

Complete the remaining fields and select a name for the entry so that you can easily identify the DL in your Address Book.

Click the trackwheel and select Save.

Now you can use this DL in the To line of any message you address!
Create a Boilerplate PIN Message

Next, you need to create a sample PIN message and address it to a group of users. But don't send it just yet!

Open the Messages application on the handheld.

Click the trackwheel and select Compose PIN. The Address Book application screen appears. Select the first user you would like to include in this PIN message, click the trackwheel, and select PIN username. The Message screen appears. Enter a subject line such as "TEST PIN" for now.

Now that your message is properly addressed, click the trackwheel and select Send. The Messages screen appears, and you can see your message with a checkmark to the left indicating that it has been sent.

Select the sample message, click the trackwheel, and select Save. This will move your sample message to the Saved Messages application.

TIP: If your handheld decides that it needs to delete messages to free memory, it will not delete saved messages.

Figure 2-8. Sample PIN message addressed to three recipients

Use Your Saved Message to Send a PIN Message

Now you have a saved message in your saved messages application that you can use over and over to send a message to the users who were added as recipients. Simply open the Saved Messages application and locate your sample message.

Then follow these steps:

Click the trackwheel and select Open. The sample message opens.

Click the trackwheel to select Reply to All.

Click the trackwheel once again to select Delete Original Text.

Once the message is open, modify the Subject line so that it is appropriate, and enter the body of the message you are composing.

Once you are satisfied with the subject and body of your message, click the trackwheel and select Send.

You can use this sample message over and over again. You can also modify this message to add or remove recipients at any time, or to change the PIN of a recipient.

BlackBerry Tips,Trick,Tools & Hacks

BlackBerry Hacks from O'Reillydelivers tips, tools, and other ways to best use your BlackBerry wireless handheld's phone, inbox, organizer, and browser features for phone calls, instant messaging, email, organizing, Web browsing, receiving RSS feeds, and more.

In these article, we excerpt a number of tips or hacks from the book:

Put Notes in the Call Log :

While you are on an active call with your BlackBerry, press in the trackwheel and choose "Notes" from the menu. You will be greeted with a nice clean slate of text input, ready to accept your notes, as shown in Figure 1-56.

Figure 1-56. Adding call notes to the current call

This will, of course, be most convenient when you're using a headset or speakerphone. The way I use this feature is that I jot down notes relevant to that call such as confirmation numbers or meeting notes, and save them. I can return to the Messages application, find the call in the list of calls I've placed, and find my notes there. From here, you can also copy text and put it into its final destination, whether an email, task, or appointment.

If you don't remember to take notes during your call, don't fret: you can add notes to a previous call by opening the call in the Messages list and selecting "Add Notes" from the menu. If you have decided to not show calls in your Messages list, you can magically make them appear by pressing Alt-P [Hack #24]. You can then surf your messages list and get these useful little pieces of metadata and put them to use. If you discussed a budget, an invoice, or something else that you may need to reference later, make a note of it in the call and you can find this information later. If you need to remember what you talked about last time you spoke to Client X, the notes will be right there in the call detail!

You can also highlight a phone call that has notes, click the trackwheel, and select Forward (see Figure 1-57) to forward it (notes and all) to an email address.

Figure 1-57. Forwarding your call notes

This lets you quickly shove the notes from that important conference call to your helpless subordinates.

Top 15 Tips to Get Most Out of N91 Music Phone

Top 15 Tips for getting a better user experience out of the N91 and keeping it up-to-date. Tips range from hot to manage memory, battery life, and software to using and updating the Nokia Audio Manager and PC suite and much more. There’s even a tip on how to accelerate SMS messaging.

Just last week, the Finnish phone maker unveiled three updates to previously available Nseries phone models: the N70, N73 and - yep - the N91. The upgrades are part what's called the Nokia Nseries Music Range, with Black chassis’s all around, additional software for easier synchronization and music management and more storage in all three models. For the N73 that means Nokia now bundles a 2 GB memory card and the N70 a 1 GB card. The N91's Microdrive has been doubled to 8 GBs. It is slated to go for 550 Euros (about $702) sometime later in the year, with no word yet on American availability. So it could be sometime before the hard drive-based smartphone ships in the U.S.

In the meantime, see below to learn how to get the most out of the version of the N91 that's available now. These tips, developed by blogger Andy Abramson, will most likely equally apply to the N91 8GB as the 4 GB version - whenever it is released.

1) PC suite: Always use the latest PC suite. They are always issuing improvements etc. The PC suite issued with the early N91's (6.80.22 SW (software) versions 1.xx N91's) has issues with handling data over 1.5 GB etc. and should be replaced with 6.81.13 or later. You can get the latest PC suite from here, or other local regional sites.

2) PC suite , Nokia Audio Manager: PC suite was designed for phones with 64-512 MB cards, not mobile computers (Nokia's name for smartphones) with 4 GB of memory. It is good for managing contacts, calendar etc. but not for managing the content on your HDD (Music, Images, Applications etc). Nokia audio Manager - same comment. Users should avoid using PCsuite/NAM to manage large amounts of content and keep it solely for managing the phones ROM (C drive). Note also when using PC suite do not start running applications (Gallery, etc) during the PC suite session. Use USB mass storage for managing your Music, Movies, Images etc and/or Windows Media Player (for Music). Note also that PC suite runs in the background on your PC so often when you plug in the N91 to use USB mass storage or WMP a pop up comes up saying " PC suite - N91 connected in non compatible mode please change from UI" ignore this (it is only applicable if you want to use PC suite).

3) SW update (refresh) at home: Always use the latest N91 SW (currently 2.00). Like your PC Nokia is always issuing improvements and even new features sometimes (ex: WDRM came with 2.00 SW). The update process is simple and can be done here : www.nokia.co.uk/softwareupdate . This is a UK site, however it has all the languages, operator and country variants for the world. Read the "phone SW update FAQ's" there. The updater will recognize the version of your N91 (country, operator) and look for the SW. If there is a new version it will tell you, if not then you have the option of reloading the current SW (i.e. if you wanted to start "fresh" again) or try later. Do not disconnect, answer/make phone calls etc during the process. It has worked well for thousands of people so far. I suspect other sites in other languages will roll out eventually if you are uncomfortable doing the process in English. Also if your SW is not there it may be that your operator or country has not approved it yet. Keep trying. You can check you SW version by typing *#0000#.

4) HDD Users Guide : Nokia has now issued a HDD maintenance guide. Go to europe.nokia.com and select - Get support then from the list of phones select Nokia N91 there select User guides and from the list of languages select English. Then download the PDF. It has data about backing up and restoring (i.e. when to use PC suite and when no to), SW updates (goes through how to prepare for a SW update ), Themes and other Tips. Alot of the tips from before seem to be in here. Also copying contacts to HDD has issues with 1.xx SW on GSM only China units (from Blogs), not on WCDMA units. Note WDRM rights will not be saved with a backup-restore (MSFT rules) but usually when you buy a song you get multiple synchs so it is usually not a problems.

5) SMS accelerator : Nokia has issued an application that improves the speed of your SMS messaging. Heavy SMS users have complained about SMS messaging getting sluggish over time. This fixes it and keep sms fast. It's recommended that everyone install this and re-install this after any SW update or user reset (e.g. use of *#7370). It is available here.

6) Battery Life: If you do not care about WCDMA (3G) then in tools/settings/network - SWitch from DUAL to GSM. Make sure your WLAN "show availability" in Tools/Connection is set to "never". Do not leave Bluetooth On unless you are using it for an accessory. Do not set the HDD as your "memory in use" for messaging (SMS, MMS). HDD is not optimized for messaging. Avoid these fancy 3D active screen savers,

7) Profiles : I just leave the keypad tones off. It seems people in the past had issues with this so just leave them off on profiles. Also using the vibra in profiles that had a short beep as the message or ringtone caused problems with 1.xx SW

8) Messaging Memory: Do not set the HDD as your "memory in use" for messaging (SMS, MMS). In addition to reducing battery life - its slow (HDD buffering is optimized for Video, Music playback), you have to switch back to the phone memory each time you want to use mass storage to connect to PC. In short why keep a bunch of messages on you phone anyhow?

9) Hard resets: If you get you phone into real trouble there are two resets available. Note these should be treated as a SW update (i.e. you will lose data on your phone memory so back it up). Follow the standard backup procedure for you phone before dong this (take a look at the HDD guide TIP section). The first one is *#7370# (Code 12345), it will restore the phones memory and clean it up. If you have managed to get the phone to a state where it will not even boot up then - Press and hold simultaneously Green, 3 and * and then press simultaneously power key.

10) Gallery: When you have loaded new content via USB, after a SW update, hard resets, after removing the battery or the occasional reset the Gallery takes a while to open up (if you have alot of content it could be ~ 5-10 minutes). This is a one-off thing so be patient let it update its database and then after that it should be alot faster. The progress bar is a barber-pole thingy that does not give a very good indication (just spins). Be patient it has not crashed or hung-up just let it finish.

11) "Out of Memory": The Web browser is great but it does not handle its memory very well. At some point the web browser may issue an "Out of memory" message. This has nothing to do with the HDD memory but rather the RAM memory. Closing applications may help but it seems to work best if you simply power cycle the device (clean up RAM) before using OSS. Each SW release seems to improve this situation so its another reason to always update to the latest SW.

12) Pausing while playing a song: This happens sometimes when the file has been corrupted somewhat (during ripping, download) etc. Some songs that will play on the PC may pause on the N91. It is rare however it requires the song be ripped again.

13) "HDD unavailable" etc.: In older versions of SW it was possible to get this and even with 2.xx it can happen (more rare). Make sure the battery cover is on fully (and its magnet is not damaged - check the little box in the battery cover with a paper clip for the magnet). Make sure USB cable is not connected. Make sure you are not running any applications that are using the HDD. Sometimes 3rd party apps it seems have been found to leave a file open on the HDD even when closed and then this can happen - you may have to uninstall that app. Some apps screw up there databases and it looks like a HDD issue. Finally if none of this works then you may have to do a HDD format, or a SW update/refresh or hard reset to clean out any offending applications.

14) Gallery cant see data, content missing: PC suite can cause this if you were using this for content (PC suite looks like it finished the transfer but you have to look at the correct window in PC suit for progress..another reason why it should not be used for content management). In some cases you need to

15) Common sense and INFO: Some common sense things - do not disconnect USB cable in the middle of a transfer (disconnect properly). Don’t try and pop the battery out while accessing the HDD. The HDD can survive drops (in testing dropped >300 times) but if you are determined to abuse the N91 something will break eventually. N91-1 (WCDMA device Silver with light blue for Europe, Dark grey for APAC). N91-5 (GSM for APAC - Silver with light blue), N91 (GSM for China Silver with dark grey). RM43 is a type number for WCDMA units, RM158 is the type number for GSM only units. Yes its a 3G device (with no front facing camera), you can do video calls but it requires some flipping back and forth...the device was not optimized for Video calls (its focus was/is music). It has WLAN. It supports many different vide codecs etc. (go to N91 FAQ and type in video) etc.

More on N91
Other than some software changes, a roomier hard drive and some cosmetic differences, the 4 and 8 gig N91s are most likely otherwise the same. They both run on the Symbian OS and S60 smartphone platform. There's a 3.5 mm stereo jack for headphones right on the phone, so there's no need for dongles, and it bundles a headset and remote control.

The N91 also has dedicated keys for its audio player functions, which support the MP3, M4A, WMA, AAC, AAC+ and eAAC+ music formats. An industry standard mini USB 2.0 port makes transferring files fast and easy. There's also Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 3G connectivity.

Of course, Nokia bundles music management software with the smartphone. Drag and drop your personal music collection from your PC to your Nokia N91 or synchronize your recent music purchases with your PC. You can also create and manage your playlists directly on your Nokia N91, or shuffle songs around to build your optimal listening experience.

Other audio features include an 8-band equalizer, an FM radio, and the capability to download music files over the air. Wireless features include Bluetooth and Wi-Fi plus a GSM/GPRS/EDGE (900/1800/1900 MHz) cellular radio.

The N91 has a 2-megapixel camera for up to 1600 x 1200 still images and video. Its screen runs at 176 x 208 pixels. At 4.5 x 2.2 x 0.9 inches (113.1 x 55.2 x 22 millimeters) and 5.8 ounces (164 grams) the smartphone is much smaller than the relatively bulky N90 camera phone.

The lithium ion battery is said to last for up to 10 hours of music playback, 190 hours standby time, and 3 to 4 hours talk time.

Berry 411 - Mobile Search For BlackBerry - tips,tricks,hacks

Berry 411 is perhaps the best piece of free software available for the BlackBerry, and for good reason. It boasts phone book lookups, sports scores, movie times, and more. Phil Bogle, the author of Berry 411, keeps piling on the features all the time.

The most recent version (3.30) adds phone numbers that you've input to your address book from within the program to the Berry 411 history for easy retrieval the next time you need to use it. Previous versions added autocomplete for searches, more plugins, and integration with the BlackBerry Address Book.

You launch the app from a purple "411" icon after installation, upon which you setup your home, work, and “other” addresses to customize your search results.

With Berry 411, you can perform Yellow Page, White Page, Google, Movie, Weather and Shopping (Froogle) searches. The plugins add a great deal more to the application’s search capabilities, including reverse phone lookup, driving directions, sports, stocks, flight tracking, and the Internet Movie Database. And that's only the tip of the iceberg.

The latest version of Berry 411 can be downloaded over the air (OTA) here or to the desktop here from SmartPhoneToday's Free Download's section.

BlackBerry OS 4.1 Enhances Compose Screen - tips,trick,hacks

We've always had an appreciation for the way Research in Motion (RIM) sneaks new features into the BlackBerry OS under the radar. There's rarely any big announcement or hoopla for the numerous bug fixes and enhancements that are added to the point releases. Yet if you look hard enough, you'll see evidence of RIM's motivation to quietly improve on its award winning mobile experience.

Here's a feature you may not have noticed if you've recently upgraded to BlackBerry OS 4.1 or higher or gotten a newer device with the more recent platform revisions already loaded: The compose screen is noticeably more convenient.

The first image shows the compose screen on a BlackBerry 7290 with pre-4.1 hardware.

While the image below shows the compose screen of BlackBerry 7130e, which has the 4.1 system software loaded.

The BlackBerry 7290 with pre-4.1 system software gives you little or no context for your messages. If you get distracted and then return to your BlackBerry in the middle of composing, it's difficult to tell exactly what you were in the middle of doing. Were you composing an e-mail? Sending an SMS message? A PIN to PIN message? You can't be sure.

BlackBerry OS 4.1 software found in the 7130e leaves the message in the background as you write. If you were replying to a message, you'd see the quoted text of the message you're replying to at the bottom of the screen. This enables you to easily see the context in which you were composing your message.

DIY: Dock for T-mobile MDA or 8125

DIYthinker has some tips on creating A simple dock for T-mo MDA (aka HTC Wizard) from cardboard and a spare USB to mini USB wire.

“I wanted a dock but couldn’t afford it right now so I had an idea of making it myself. It was a spontanious project that was fun and completely usable. I think it looks decent apart from the glue marks but it works great and lets the MDA stand vertically as its being charged/synced. It’s not very difficult to make so anyone can try if interested.” Visit Dock for T-mobile MDA or 8125 (Wizard)

Screen adjustment for Blackjack - tips,tricks,hacks

Okay for all my current Sling box users, here is a workaround until there is a beta version for this smartphone .

It seems the issue is that the sling player doesn't properly support the native resolution of the BlackJack's screen (320x240) (TriNe0 figured this out because I could see the video when TriNe0 pressed the menu button...). Here's what you need to do:

1. Launch sling mobile player but do not connect

2. click on Menu > Player Options > Encoding

3. Scroll down, and uncheck "auto resolution mode"

4. Change the video resolution to "160x120"

5. Hit OK...and you're set!

The downside is that, unless you view in full screen, the size of the image is real small... But watching it in full screen should be fine... and hopefully the picture quality will improve if Sling can get this to work in 320x240...

Tested and it does work and allow you to get a full screen ( a little blurry) but a bigger screen nonetheless.

Rumors: iPhone update to add disk mode

A forthcoming iPhone software update will add features such as voice recording and disk mode, according to an unconfirmed report from an overseas publication. Meanwhile, a previously rumored relationship between Apple and Volkswagen appears to have never made it to first base.

Apple may be preparing a significant update for the iPhone as early as this weekend that will have some heavily requested features, according to a claim from CNET France translated by Electronista.

The overseas publication says multiple rumblings suggest that a 1.1.3 upgrade for the iPhone will appear by Saturday, adding both a disk mode for storing general data on the device and a voice recording mode for capturing lectures or voice memos.

The disk feature will reportedly behave like the equivalent for iPods but will still block users from simply dragging and dropping media content onto their phones, CNET says.

While unverified, the reported release would come roughly a month after the 1.1.2 update that added international keyboard support and other minor upgrades to the iPhone for its launches in Germany and the UK.

It should be noted that the report runs contrary to recent claims by Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster, who in a note to clients last month stated that Apple would hold off on issuing any additional significant software updates for iPhone until early next year. At that time, the analyst said, the touch-screen handset would gain a system-wide Spotlight search function.

Nokia's multimedia supremo Anssi Vanoki showed off the company's new Ovi service at Nokia World today, demonstrating how it'll work on PCs, online and on mobile handsets.
